Evangelical Seminary in Massachusetts Goes Green

American Baptist minister Russell H. Conwell held the ideology that “we must know what the world needs first and then invest ourselves to supply that need,” and believed by doing so the path to success was imminent. To do this he instructed followers to “begin where you are and with what you are.”

In 2016 Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, one of the largest evangelical seminaries in North America, carried out that ethos.

The school’s integrative approach to education has provided students with cutting-edge innovation since being founded. The addition of solar power continues that great tradition.

In 2016 they committed themselves to becoming more environmentally friendly. They consulted with their energy management firm, Patriot Energy Group, whom they’ve maintained a relationship with for over a decade, to help meet their needs and achieve long-term sustainability goals.

Prior to their ambitious energy undertaking, Patriot Energy assisted them with their procurement needs by helping mitigate the risk of significant, unexpected rate increases and controlling their electricity costs.

After assessing the facility Patriot Energy Group advocated for solar energy, among other recommendations. Gordon-Conwell was a great candidate to effectuate solar technology, and it was a perfect opportunity for them to demonstrate their commitment to sustainability. A Solar Photovoltaic (PV) system would also provide an excellent long-term cash flow and rate of return; which Gordon-Conwell saw as a substantial benefit.

Although hesitant at first, having replaced the roof two years prior, the installation of a roof-mounted 217 kW (DC) Solar Photovoltaic system began on Gordon-Conwell’s main campus in South Hamilton, Massachusetts. To assist with project management, engineering, and also to secure financing, Patriot Energy Group worked with their solar partners 621 Energy. The shingled-roof project was successfully installed in only eight weeks, with the work occurring right above student’s rooms and staff offices. All parties unanimously agreed that the project was a great success.

I want to congratulate Gordon-Conwell on the completion of this 217 kW solar project as part of their commitment to sustainability and good stewardship practices.” Said Bob Clark from 621 Solutions. “I also want to thank the Gordon-Conwell community for their support and patience during the school-year implementation of this project.

Gordon-Conwell is especially pleased with the new installation and excited to reduce their carbon footprint and begin to offset their electricity bills. They believe showcasing renewable technology to its diverse array of students (from 98 denominations and 55 different countries) has enriched their community. They hope this is the first of many opportunities to minimize environmental impacts through technological advancements.
